BAYONNE — Mayor-Elect Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski has announced the appointment of her brother, retired Bayonne Police Lieutenant James “Jimmy” Ashe, as the city’s next Director of Public Safety when the new administration takes office July 1.
The appointment has generated mixed reactions among residents. Some have raised concerns about nepotism and potential conflicts of interest due to the family relationship, while others argue Ashe’s decades of experience in law enforcement, emergency management, investigations and public administration make him highly qualified for the role.
According to the announcement, Ashe served more than three decades with the Bayonne Police Department and previously held leadership roles in investigations, counter-terrorism and emergency management. He most recently managed the Bayonne Motor Vehicle Commission office.
The debate has sparked discussion throughout Bayonne over whether elected officials should appoint family members to senior government positions, even when those relatives have extensive experience and qualifications.
