How Jersey Alerts works

Sources, updates, and limitations

Jersey Alerts brings several New Jersey information streams into one readable place. This page explains where information comes from, what we change, how quickly it may update, and when you should go directly to an official source.

Primary source systems

Our automated and editorial workflows may use the following public systems, along with direct releases from state, county, municipal, police, fire, emergency-management, transportation, and utility agencies:

What we normalize

Source formats vary. Jersey Alerts may standardize a headline, category, location, severity label, publication time, map position, and source link so readers can scan information consistently. We do not change an agency's underlying instruction. When a source provides a direct notice, the alert should link back to it.

Update timing and limitations

“Live” and “real-time” describe a frequently updated service, not a guarantee of instantaneous delivery. Agency publication delays, scheduled imports, feed outages, connectivity, changing incident boundaries, and human review can all create lag. Camera images may also pause, refresh slowly, or be unavailable at the provider.

Early reports can change. Check the displayed source and timestamp, and confirm critical decisions with the responsible agency. Jersey Alerts is not 911 or an emergency dispatch service. Call 911 for immediate danger.

Corrections, sourcing, and citation

Send a correction when a location, source, time, description, or status appears wrong. Include the Jersey Alerts URL and the official record supporting the change. For research or newsroom use, cite the original agency whenever available; if you also cite Jersey Alerts, include the page title, URL, and access date because developing pages can change.
