: June 18, 2026 Paterson Police Department– Patrick Murray, Officer in Charge For Further Information: Media Inquiries-Rob RowanOAGpress@njoag.gov LODI – The Paterson Police Department proudly welcomed 15 new police officers following their graduation from the Bergen County Police Academy during a ceremony held June 18 at Felician University in Lodi. The graduates successfully completed the academy’s rigorous training program and were officially sworn in as members of the Paterson Police Department, where they will now begin serving the residents of Paterson. “Today marks the beginning of an important chapter for these officers and for our department,” said Officer in Charge Patrick Murray.
“They have demonstrated the dedication, discipline, and commitment required to join the Paterson Police Department. As they begin their careers, they will help strengthen our ability to serve the community while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and compassion.” The graduating class consisted of nine men and six women ranging in age from 20 to 32. More than half of the new officers are Spanish-speaking, helping further enhance the department’s ability to communicate with and serve Paterson’s diverse community.
Three members of the class previously served as police dispatchers, bringing valuable public safety experience and a strong understanding of emergency response operations to their new roles. Throughout their academy training, the recruits received instruction in criminal and motor vehicle law, first aid and CPR, opioid reversal response, use of force standards, de-escalation techniques, defensive tactics, domestic violence response, communication skills, community policing, and New Jersey’s Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics (ICAT) program, which emphasizes critical thinking, crisis intervention, and safe resolution strategies. The program also emphasized physical fitness, firearms proficiency, officer wellness, and community interactions.
The new officers will now enter the department’s field training program, where they will work alongside experienced field training officers and gain practical, hands-on experience. They will also spend time on walking patrols throughout the city, allowing them to engage directly with residents and develop a deeper understanding of the neighborhoods they serve. The addition of these 15 officers represents another important investment in public safety and continues the department’s efforts to build a stronger, more responsive police force dedicated to serving the people of Paterson.
