What we documented and what was reported

A man was reported critically injured after gunfire in downtown Newark on Monday night, October 5, according to a preliminary report from RLS Media.

Jersey Alerts went to the scene later Monday night and independently documented a police presence and street closures in downtown Newark. Our original photographs and video show marked police vehicles positioned across the roadway and police tape restricting access.

RLS reported that police found the man with a gunshot wound to his chest near Broad and Market streets and that he was taken to University Hospital in critical condition. That condition was reported in the outlet’s 8:35 p.m. account; Jersey Alerts has not independently confirmed a subsequent medical update.

GUNFIRE REPORTED MONDAY NIGHT

According to RLS, a ShotSpotter activation registered gunfire at approximately 8:25 p.m. in the 80s block of Park Place. Responding officers canvassed the area before locating the wounded man near Broad and Market.

The gunfire-detection location and the location where the man was found are separate details. The preliminary account does not establish exactly where he was shot.

OUR CAMERAS CAPTURED THE POLICE RESPONSE

Our on-scene reporting verified the police presence and street closure at the time we visited. The photographs below show two additional views of the response, including police vehicles and the taped-off roadway near Market Street.

The recording is not a live traffic advisory and does not establish whether those restrictions remain in place. Drivers and pedestrians should follow officers’ directions and posted barriers at the scene.

WHAT REMAINS UNCONFIRMED

The victim’s identity, a subsequent condition update, the circumstances leading to the gunfire and any later arrest developments have not been independently established by Jersey Alerts. The injury, hospital and gunfire-alert details are attributed to RLS’s preliminary reporting; the observations of police presence and street closures are Jersey Alerts’ own reporting from the scene.
