What the official update says

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A 90-year-old woman died and three other people were injured in the October 1 fire on Boyd Avenue, according to a Friday statement from Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello reported by Hudson County View.

How the fire unfolded

The prosecutor’s account said the Jersey City Fire Department was notified just after 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, of a fire at 81 Boyd Avenue. Arriving responders encountered heavy fire coming from a single-family home, Hudson County View reported.

Victim identified; three people injured

Prosecutors identified the woman who died as Zenaida Mojica, 90, of Jersey City. She was removed from the home during firefighting efforts and pronounced dead a short time later.

The three injured were two male residents of the home and one firefighter. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to the prosecutor’s account. Daily Voice’s Friday report also reported the victim’s identity and the three-person injury count.

The prosecutor’s office reported that 19 people were displaced from their residences.

What Jersey Alerts saw that night

By approximately 10:30 p.m. on October 1, the fire had been extinguished. Jersey Alerts observed crews still on scene and continuing to work.

Boyd Avenue remained closed between Kennedy Boulevard and West Side Avenue at that time. The nighttime photographs accompanying this story document the aftermath.

Cause remains under investigation

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is investigating the fire’s cause and origin, according to the prosecutor’s account reported by Hudson County View and Daily Voice. Foul play was not suspected at the time of the statement. A determined cause was not announced in that update.
